Work on Castel Sant'Angelo started in 123 A.D. as a tomb for the Emperor Hadrian. Over the centuries it has experienced several transformations. Firstly it became a defensive fortress, then, during the Renaissance it was enriched and turned into luxurious apartments for the Popes. In the nineteenth century, during the ‘Risorgimento' period of Italian history, it was used to hold political prisoners. Today, it is a museum which contains collections of military arms, furnishings and pictures and hosts numerous temporary exhibitions.
