The Treasury of St. Peter's, which was constituted throughout time with donations made by Popes, Cardinals, Emperors and Kings and by believers of the Christian world to the Vatican Basilica, that they wanted to worship when they reached the tomb of Peter the Apostle, includes a wide range of church ornaments and vestments used for liturgical worship. Some archaeological finds, placed among the exhibited objects, recall the Basilica's foundation, desired by the Emperor Costantine at the beginning of the 4th century. The “ Liber Pontificalis “ lists many rich donations, by means of which Costantine and his successors wanted to adopt St. Peter's Basilica. Some of them were unfortunately lost. The history of the Treasury of St. Peter's is the history of the worship and generosity of the believers of the Christian world, who reached in pilgrimage the Tomb of the Prince of the Apostles. The Treasury of St. Peter's, until last century, went through a difficult era. Along the centuries many real pillages took place and many objects disappeared. Only thanks to our Popes and to our Vatican Canons could several relices and several remarkable objects be recovered. Facilitated by an enlargement in 1909 and a new organisation in1949, we reached the present arrangement in 1975.
