On Via Tiburtina, 20 km. from Rome and 8 km. from Tivoli, the sulphur springs that have their source in the lakes Regina and Colonnelle are to be found. They are still know by their original Roman name, "Acque Albule" (Albule Waters). Their whitish colour is due to a gaseous emulsion that forms on the surface when the pressure decreases releasing the carbonic anyhdride and hydrogen sulphide originally dissolved in the water. Famous during the Roman era and thought by the Ancient Romans to have miraculous healing powers capable of curing any illness they are still well- known today and are used for therapeutic purposes in the spa of the same name. They were often mentioned by the Latin poets who sang their praises. Virgil spoke of them in the Aeneid and Strabo remembers how many more Roman Villas were to be found near the springs than in the town of Tivoli itself. The Empereor Cesar Augustus, who probably suffered from gout, found such relief from the sulphur baths that he deided to commission the architect M.Vespasiano Agrippa to build sumptuous thermal baths, the massive ruins of which can still be amired. Having discovered this water with its particular properties in Tivoli and realising its potential, the Romans used it for both therapeutic and beauty purposes which was the start of the Baths' activity as we know it today.
