The address which Johann Wolfgang Goethe sent to his friends in Weimar shortly after he arrived in Rome will soon be one for today's visitors to Rome to note.
For here, on the very same floor where Goethe lodged with his friend, the German painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, from 1786 to 1788, a new museum, the "Casa di Goethe", is being opened.
On a floor space of about 600 square metres the museum will show changing exhibitions in honour of the house's famous guest. The main focus will be on Goethe's Italian journey, and the impact which Italy made on the great man of literature and his work, and the wide and varied history of its reception.
The programme will include events to accompany the exhibitions, like lectures, readings, concerts, and film shows.
By prior appointment the visitor will also be able to use a specialist library, containing a rich selection of first editions, illustrated editions, and secondary literature.
The Casa di Goethe is being founded by the Arbeitskreis selbständiger Kultur- Institute - AsKI (Association of Independent Cultural Institutes) in Bonn. It is hoped that, in cooperation with the AsKI member institutes and the other German institutions in Rome, the new museum will become a lively centre for German- Italian cultural exchange.
