The Etruscan necropolis of Banditaccia extends 10 hectares and conserves nearly 400 burial sites of varying descriptions. These sepulchres date from the 8th to the 2nd century B.C. and it is this rich record which has allowed us to chart the various changes in Etruscan funerary customs. Importantly, moreover, the very same archaeological site has also allowed scholars to understand similar changes in urban living because the necropolis itself was designed and built as a complete urban centre with the sepulchres arranged along streets which branch off from main streets as if they were houses.
The most common type of tomb is the tumulus, a circular structure cut directly into the earth and with a cumulus – a pinnacle of turf – marking the location. The burial chamber was accessed along an access corridor but today these tombs can be admired through glass protection panels which maintain the humidity and temperature inside, thus preserving the beautiful stuccos which decorate the interior.
Many objects recovered from the necropolis are exhibited in the Museo Archeologico Cerite and include the whole range of domestic objects from everyday cooking utensils to items relating to the keeping of pets, banqueting and funerary objects and various ceramics.
